It’s been a week in the woods. Maybe today will be the day. Maybe the Atlas will start and at least quit on the highway next time.

Have a satirical laugh: O !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , 43% say 5-stars. The rest? Equally divided among the rest of the stars, from 4 down to 1, nearly equal percents. Anything from a great new car with obvious first-year fixes to downright lemon square-tastic ownership. Overall a 3.6, but the stories tell the obvious. It works until it doesn’t and when it doesn’t, it’s pretty bad unfix-able electrical problems. You have a 50% chance of a good vehicle. And equally a vehicle with problems. 50% isn’t good enough for anyone i’m afraid. Roll that 1d20, and bend over to accept the result. It might be fun!

So it’s on par with everything else VW makes?

I would buy a $35k used Cayenne before I bought a new Atlas. It will be way more reliable in the long run, even with a 50k mile head start.

It’s strange how Europeans think that VW’s are so reliable. I used to work with a lot of Germans and they swore that VW was the most reliable brand.  It must be because they’ve never owned a Honda or Toyota.

Maybe Volkswagens made in Germany hold up better than those made in Mexico, Brazil, or the U.S. I’d still take my chances with a Toyota or Honda first , though.

I miss my Golf Sportwagen a lot. But part of me is glad it got totaled at 30k miles before any fatal flaws popped up. Sometimes I would be cruising along the highway at 70mph and a DSG alert would flash on the screen for a second

It’s a reputation based on older generation VWs, built in Germany. It certainly isn’t based on anything from North America (they never sold those in Europe, or in tiny numbers) and not on models introduced in the 21st century either.

Looking back, my base model 1991 (mk2) Golf truly was incredibly reliable. A better car than a similar year Corolla, even if only because it would not dissolve in rust as easily (and was better to drive with a better interior). A used mk5 or newer Golf though? I’m not a masochist.

Honda has turned itself into a niche brand in Europe, but Toyota is quite big. Europeans car about more than sheer reliability though, and beyond reliability Toyota tends to be rather uncompetitive. Mediocre at best.

I have test driven the Atlas several times and was kinda sold on it as an Enclave replacement until the Telluride came along. The Atlas, like the Telluride, is a great value for the money and they both have excellent warranties . Around here you can routinely get $7500 off sticker on the VW. However, the most popular trim, SE w /Tech, doesn’t come with rear parking sensors. That’s unforgivable in a vehicle this large. You have to move up to the SEL to get them. The SE w/Tech also doesn’t have real leather. So , we went with the Telluride EX. So far, so good.
